Do you like shrimp? There are few people who do not like this delicious seafood.

But have you ever wondered how shrimp are produced?

Yes! You got it right. Sea shrimp make up a small percentage of the shrimp available in the markets, and a significant part of the world’s shrimp is produced by shrimp farms.

There are many shrimp farms in the world and in Iran. We, Atlas Meigoo Khalij Fars Company, are one of these farms that have been breeding and producing shrimp for several years in the Rood-Helle site, near the Persian Gulf. We are proud to be considered one of the most successful companies in Iran’s shrimp farming industry.

But how is shrimp farming done? It is better to know that it is not an easy task at all. To grow shrimp, a lot of knowledge, expertise, experience, facilities and equipment are needed. Shrimp breeding is done in different ways in the world as traditional methods to ultra-advanced and modern methods.

At the farm of Atlas Meigoo Khalij Fars Company, we use the semi-dense method to grow shrimp. We have 15 pools, each of which has an area of ​​one hectare. To start working, we need to prepare the pools first. Pool preparation has several stages, including washing, drying, peeling, plowing, liming, etc.

When the pond is ready, we can bring the baby shrimp or post larvae, that we have obtained from special breeding centers to the farm.

You may know that there are many species of shrimp around the world.  Breeding Vannamei shrimp has been the priority of most farmers for several years. The reason for its popularity is its high compatibility. Vannamei shrimp is also our chosen species.

When the baby shrimp are transferred from the breeding center to the farm, we must provide the pond water according to the conditions of their keeping in the breeding center. Before leaving them in the pool, we slowly pour the pool water into their holding bags and wait one to two hours to be adapted to the pool water. Then, we release all the baby shrimp into the pool. The number of baby shrimp, that can be stored in each pool, depends on the area and facilities. We stock 400,000 baby shrimp in each pond. This is the new home for baby shrimp where they are supposed to live for about five months.

how do we control the shrimp pool’s water quality ?

Due to the sensitivity of the baby shrimp, it is necessary to constantly check and control the pool water during the breeding period. Things that need to be checked are temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity and pH of the water. If any of these items decrease or increase to a large extent, they must be returned to normal by means of some solutions. For example, to control water oxygen, we have devices called aerators, which produce oxygen during the hours when oxygen is low.

Importance of shrimp’s feeding system

Okay! It’s time to discuss the important and interesting topic of nutrition. Baby shrimp need food to grow. Of course, there is natural food in the pool water, but it is not enough. There are formulated corporate foods that come from food factories. Maybe you have a question about how the feeding is done in these large pools. Some farms put food in the pool in the traditional way. But in our farm, we feed the baby shrimp with devices called feeders. These devices are adjustable and automatically sprinkle food into the pool. Shrimp may not like a certain type of food and do not eat it. To find out this issue, we check their feeding many times a day.

Controlling shrimps health

During the breeding period, we must be careful of shrimp diseases. Yes, shrimp get sick, too. Environmental conditions or water pollution can cause shrimp disease. It is necessary to check the health of the shrimp daily and if there is disease, it is needed for the experts to identify the cause of this and suggest an effective treatment before it becomes an epidemic.

Shrimp breeding is not an easy task, isn’t it?!

Now, five months have been past. Our baby shrimp are mature, active, uniform in color and ready to harvest.

How shrimps are harvested?

Harvesting is done in several ways. We use a device that pumps the pool water through a large tube and directs the shrimp into the tank. About one ton of shrimp is harvested from each pond.

Since shrimp spoil very quickly, post-harvest handling is very important. As soon as they are harvested, we wash the shrimp and put them in a mixture of water and ice to numb them. Then they are poured in a solution called sodium metabisulfite not to get stained. The next step is to put the shrimp in baskets and cover them with ice and put them in trucks to be transported to the next destination, the processing plant.

In the processing plant, after washing and separating the waste, the shrimp enter a device called a sorter to be separated by size. Different size of shrimp is weighed and prepackaged and sent to the freezing tunnel to be frozen. After about eight hours, they are taken out and packed in bigger cartons. Then they are sent to the cold store and kept there until they are loaded and transferred to the consumer market.
