An overview of the aquaculture history in the world and Iran

Aquaculture has played an important role in providing protein needed by human societies since many years ago, and this field plays a major role in the employment and industry of countries.

Fish, shrimp, crab, lobster, etc. are aquatic animals that are being cultivated in different parts of the world. Today, we see the development of fisheries in countries that do not even have access to open water.

The history of shrimp farming goes back to the early 20th century, where people in East Asia discovered how to cultivate shrimp on the coast using the sea tides.

But where is the starting point of shrimp farming in Iran? Since the decade of sixties SH (1980s A.D.), shrimp farming as an industry gained its foothold among other industries in Iran. This industry is currently known as one of the most important industries in job creation and non-oil exports.

At first, native species such as green tiger shrimp and banana shrimp were used as cultured species. The next cultured species was the Indian white shrimp, which was considered among Iran’s native shrimps. Vannamei shrimp replaced native species in 1385 SH (2006), and due to its high resistance to disease and environmental changes, it has kept its position as the dominant breeding species in Iran’s shrimp farms.

The shrimp farming industry started with 7 farms in Iran and now around 800 farms are working in Hormozgan, Khuzestan, Bushehr, Sistan and Baluchistan and Golestan provinces.

In Iran, currently, the highest amount of shrimp production is from Bushehr. What has turned Bushehr province into a hub for shrimp production?

First, let’s take a look at the geographical location of Bushehr province.

Geographical location of Bushehr province

Bushehr is located in the southwest of Iran. Having a 700 km water border with the Persian Gulf has made it a strategic region and has led to the development of fisheries and related industries in this province.

Numerous ports and fishing grounds, suitable land for shrimp farming and the presence of various aquatic species are important factors in the development of the aquatic industry in Bushehr.

Aquaculture in Bushehr Province

Bushehr has various industries and fishery industry has always been one of the important industries in it. The fishery industry is divided into two sectors: fishing and aquaculture. The lack of marine resources has led to the breeding and production of aquatic animals in recent years. Due to its proximity to the Persian Gulf, Bushehr has great potential in the field of aquaculture.

Fish and shrimp breeding is one of the important capabilities of Bushehr, and being the leader in these fields is a confirmation of this claim.

According to the latest reports, in the first 9 months of 1401 SH (2022), 41,200 tons of fish were produced in Bushehr. This province could take the first place in fish production in Iran.

Fish farming in cages is another growing project in Bushehr, and according to forecasts, it will reach 60,000 tons per year in the next three years.

Considering the job creation and profitability of aquaculture, we see the increase in investments and development of this industry.

One of the side activities in the aquaculture industry is the production of aquatic feed, which is being developed in Bushehr. Four aquaculture feed factories are currently working in it, and they are supplying most of the feed needed by aquaculture farmers.

Hatcheries are another cluster of the aquaculture industry that we see its growth and prosperity. There are 22 hatcheries in Bushehr. It is expected that this year, they will produce three billion pieces of baby shrimp for storage from 81 thousand pairs of adult and mature shrimp.

Bushehr province, the standard bearer of shrimp production in Iran

The presence of susceptible coastal lands and the existence of numerous ports and customs have led to the prosperity of shrimp farming industry in Bushehr. In 1401 SH (2022), 61 thousand tons of farmed shrimp were produced in 5 provinces of Iran which 38 thousand tons were from Bushehr, and it was a new record and its production was increased by more than 30% compared to 1400 SH (2021). This means that Bushehr produces more than half of the farmed shrimp in country. Therefore, it is considered the first pole of shrimp production.

The shrimp produced in 1401 SH (2022) was obtained from a total of 12 active sites and more than 400 farms in the province.

It is expected that shrimp production in Bushehr will reach 44 thousand tons in 1402 SH (2023), and 100 thousand tons of shrimp will be harvested from the farms with the continuation of infrastructure development in 1404 SH (2025).

The position of Bushehr shrimp in the world market
