Do you like shrimp? There are few people who do not like this delicious seafood.

But have you ever wondered how shrimp are produced?

Yes! You got it right. Sea shrimp make up a small percentage of the available shrimp in the markets, and a significant part of the world’s shrimp is produced in shrimp farms.

There are many shrimp farms in the world and in Iran. We, Atlas Meigoo Khalij Fars Company, are one of these farms that have been breeding and producing shrimp for several years in the Rood-Helle site, adjacent to the Persian Gulf. We are proud to be considered one of the most successful companies in Iran’s shrimp farming industry.

But how is shrimp breeding done? It is better to know that it is not an easy task at all. To grow shrimp, a lot of knowledge, expertise, experience, facilities, and equipment are needed. Shrimp breeding is done in different ways in the world as traditional methods to ultra-advanced and modern methods.

What is the best species to farm?

You know that there are many species of shrimp around the world. Vanami shrimp has been the priority of most farmers for breeding for several years. The reasons for its popularity are its resistance to disease, rapid growth, adaptability to the environment, etc. Vanami shrimp is also our chosen species.

Each shrimp farm has its own story. Would you like to hear the story of our farm? So stay with us.

Methods and steps for farming shrimp

At our farm, Atlas Meigoo Khalij Fars Company, we use the semi-dense method to grow shrimp. We have 15 ponds, each of which has an area of about one hectare. To start breeding, we need to prepare the ponds first. Ponds preparation has several stages, including washing, drying, peeling, plowing, liming, etc. After finishing the preparation steps, the ponds are washed again and filled with water. Now it is time to transfer the larvae from the hatchery to the farm.

When larvae are transferred to the farm, they are stocked in the ponds after acclimatization. The number of baby shrimp that can be stocked in each pool depends on the area, volume of water and facilities. In 2022, we stocked 400,000 larvae (baby shrimp) in each pool.

This is the new home for baby shrimp where they are supposed to live for about four months.

Due to the sensitivity of the baby shrimp, water quality parameters must be regularly monitored and controlled during the breeding period. The parameters, that need to be checked, are its temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and PH. If any of these items decrease or increase to a large extent, they must be returned to normal by means of some solutions. For example, to control water oxygen, we have devices called aerators which produce oxygen.

Feeding shrimps

Okay! It’s time to discuss the important and interesting topic of feeding. Baby shrimp need food to grow. Of course, there is natural food in the pond water, but it is not enough. There are formulated foods that come from food factories. Maybe you have a question about how the feeding is done in these large ponds. Some farms spread the food in the pool in the traditional way (by hand). But in our farm, we feed the baby shrimp with automatic machine feeder that are adjustable and automatically sprinkle food into the pond.

Of course, shrimps may not show interest in food and not eat it for any reason (food quality, pool temperature, etc.). To find out the reason, monitoring is done several times a day. On the other hand, the shrimp may eat the food but not grow; in order to control this issue, it is usually checked in ten-day periods.

shrimp diseases and solutions

During the breeding period, we must be careful of shrimp diseases. Yes, shrimps get sick too. Environmental conditions, transferring from hatchery, water pollution or other factors can cause shrimp disease. It is necessary to check the health of the shrimp daily. If the disease is detected, it is necessary that the experts find the cause of the disease and suggest an effective treatment before it becomes an epidemic.

Shrimp breeding is not an easy task, isn’t it?!

Harvesting shrimps

Now, four months have been past. The shrimp are mature, active, uniform in color and ready to harvest.

Harvest is done in several ways. We use a shrimp harvesting machine that sucks shrimp and pond water through a large tube and directs the shrimps into the tubs that are on the dike and filled with ice-water slurry. Then, the pool water is removed to the drain canal through another pipe. In 2022, we harvested about seven tons of shrimp from each pond.

Since shrimp spoil very quickly, post-harvest management is very important. As soon as they are harvested, we wash the shrimp in a mixture of water, ice and sodium metabisulfite solution to anesthetize them and prevent their staining. The next step is to put the shrimp in the baskets and cover them with ice and put them in the trucks to be transported to the next destination, the processing plant.

In the processing plant, after washing and separating the waste, the shrimp enter a device called a sorter to be separated by size. Different size of shrimp is weighed and prepackaged and sent to the freezing tunnel to be frozen. About eight hours later, they are taken out and packed in bigger cartons. Then they are sent to storage warehouses (cold stores) with a temperature of -18 degrees and kept there until they are loaded and transferred to the consumer market.

Our story does not end here! Our main story begins when our produced shrimp enter the market and reach the consumers and sit on their table.

At Atlas Meigoo Khalij Fars Company, we do our best to produce and supply high-quality shrimp by applying modern knowledge, modern facilities and methods and distribute our produced shrimp in the world markets. We will soon become a familiar and reliable brand in your food basket. Wait for us!
