Different seafood markets use different scales for counting and sizing shrimp; some markets use shrimp count per pound and others use shrimp count per kilogram. There are two numbers on both scales, one small and one large. For example, when talking about 40-50 shrimp, the small number is 40 and the big one is 50. What do these numbers mean?

This means that the total weight of 40 to 50 shrimp is equal to one kilogram. As the numbers get smaller, the shrimp’s size becomes bigger. It is clear that the larger shrimps are more expensive in international seafood markets.

What is huge shrimp called?

Large shrimp are often known as “king shrimp” or “king prawn”. Shrimp of 10-20 or 20-30 per kilogram usually give the best combination of flavor, ease, and value. The size of each king shrimp is around 20-30 cm long and the body diameter is approximately 3.5-4 cm.

The vast majority of king shrimp products come from farms in Southeast Asia and Central America. However, an estimated 5 to 10 percent of king shrimp is wild-caught shrimp.
