Important organizations related to fisheries, aquatics and seafood

As you know, an organization is a group of people who work together to achieve a common goal or objectives.

In different industries, there are various national and international organizations that are formed and established to achieve related goals.

The fishery industry is one of the important and growing industries that since its inception, various organizations have emerged with the aim of developing this industry and smoothing the obstacles and solving its problems.

Organizations are divided into different types depending on their purpose and nature as:

  1. intra-country or national organizations that operate within a country.
  2. regional organizations that are specific to a geographic region such as East Asia.
  3. international organizations such as FAO that operate at the global level.

1-Iran Fisheries Organization

Iran Fisheries Organization was founded in 1332 SH (1953 AD) and was named as Iran Fishery Company by Dr. Mohammad Mosaddegh (First Minister of Time). In 1384 SH (2005 AD), its name was changed to Iran Fisheries Organization. It has been working under the supervision of the Ministry of Jihad and Agriculture since 1384. The central office of this organization is located in Tehran. Among its main goals, we can mention the following:

protection of the country’s aquatic resources, planning for optimum and sustainable use of aquatic resources, development of management and care of aquaculture infrastructures.

2-Iran Aquatics Production and Trade Union

This association was established in 1376 SH (1997 AD) by activists and stakeholders in the field of aquaculture. Its management method is a board of directors, who are elected through voting. The most important goals of this union are the development of processing, the increase of per capita domestic consumption,tAhe improvement and promotion of seafood exports.

3-Iran Veterinary Organization

Iran Veterinary Organization is one of the governmental organizations related to aquatics, which was established in 1304 SH (1925 AD). Since 1379 SH (2000 AD), this organization has been considered a subgroup of the Ministry of Jihad Agriculture. The most important goal of the veterinary organization is to protect the health of animals and ensure the safety of animal products.

4-Iran Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Iran Food and Drug Organization is a subgroup of the Ministry of Health, which started its activity in 1389 SH (2010 AD). The most important goal of this organization is to support the health of people in the society through the control and supervision of medicinal and cosmetic products and processed food.

At the international and regional level, several organizations are active in the field of aquaculture and fisheries. Now we intend to introduce the most important and original one.

1. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

There are few people who have not heard the name of FAO. In 1945, the members of the United Nations established an organization that its goal was to increase the standard of living, to improve the nutritional status of the world’s people, to distribute food properly and to create food security. The headquarters of this organization is located in Rome, Italy.

FAO is made up of different departments, the Fisheries Department is one of them. The fisheries meeting is held with the presence of member countries once a year. The aim of this department is the development of the fishing industry, sustainable development to protect the seas and marine resources and increase the role of aquatics as a solution to eliminate global malnutrition.

2. Indian Ocean Fishery Commission (IOFC)

This organization is related to FAO, which was established in 1967, with the cooperation of the countries near to Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Its goals are the implementation of programs related to the development of fisheries, research and examination of related management issues and problems in the mentioned area. The meetings of this committee are held once every two years.

3. Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)

This commission was established in 1997 under the supervision of FAO. At the beginning, this commission was “Indo-Pacific Tuna Program”, which was changed to this name in 1997. Since the establishment of this commission, the purpose of FAO is to protect tuna stocks and tuna species, to improve the sustainable development of fisheries and to support research and development programs.

4. Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI)

Regional Fisheries Commission was established by FAO in 2000 AD. The members of this commission are the countries of Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman. The goals of this commission are to improve and increase the decision-making power of the member countries, to strengthen the cooperation between the members, to make the best use of the aquatic resources and to develop aquaculture in the region.

5. Caspian Environment Program (CEP)

This program was formed by the countries bordering Caspian Sea including Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Russia in 1998 AD. The main goal of this program is to implement optimal management and environmental principles in Caspian Sea and its surroundings.

6. Codex Alimentarius

Codex was created under the joint supervision of FAO and WHO in 1961. This commission is a group of food standards with the aim of protecting the health of the world’s people and guaranteeing food trade. It has about 140 members. One of the branches of this commission is specialized in aquatic products, whose task is to provide standards for aquatic products, both fresh and processed. Meetings, related to the aquatic sector, are held in Norway.


This organization was formed under the supervision of FAO in 1981, but it separated from FAO in 1987. Now it is completely an independent organization. The focus of this organization is on the Asia and Oceania region. Its goals are to develop fisheries industry in the member countries, to support the field of aquatic products, to provide marketing information and to improve exports.

8. Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia-Pacific (NACA)

This organization started working in 1988 AD. The first members were China, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, etc. NACA is an independent organization and its budget is secured through membership fees, technical services and assistance from developed countries.

Its important goals are the development of aquaculture, supporting self-reliance in the region and encouraging the role of women in the development of aquaculture.

9. Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME)

It is one of the organizations of Persian Gulf and Sea of ​​Oman, which has a positive record in protecting marine resources against pollution. This organization was established in 1982 AD. Its members are Iran, Kuwait, Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Its aim is to examine the marine environment in Persian Gulf region and in Sea of Oman by evaluating the level of pollution and its effects on the marine environment, the fishery industry, and the health of all human and aquatic organisms.

10.South-East Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC)

This center was established as an independent center in 1967 AD. The member countries of this organization are Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Brunei. The purpose of this organization is to improve and expand the fishery industry in the region.

11. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)

The need to form an international organization to protect animal and plant species by combating commercial overfishing is the reason for the establishment of this organization in 1975 AD. It has 170 members and its headquarter is located in Geneva, Switzerland. As mentioned, the goal of this organization is to support marine species in danger of extinction by controlling and issuing import and export permits for the trade of these species.

12. International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM)

This center was established in 1975. Now it is known as WorldFish Center and its headquarter is in Malaysia. The most important goals of this center are improving the welfare and living standards of people in deprived areas in developing countries, improving the production and conservation of aquatic resources, improving management structures, and improving the production system to increase sustainable production.

13. Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Center (MEMAC)

This center was established in 1983 AD in the country of Bahrain. Iran, Kuwait, Bahrain, Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman are the members of this center. Its most important goals are to combat pollution by oil and other harmful substances in case of marine emergencies, protect the marine environment, and develop education related to marine accidents.

14. Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP)

The Sustainable Shrimp Partnership is a non-governmental organization established by Ecuadorian aquaculture companies. The most important goals can be named as follows: producing healthy and rich products with sustainable production methods, cooperation to improve environmental and social functioning, creating differentiation and providing a better choice for consumers in global market of marine products.

In addition to the organizations that were mentioned, there are other international organizations that are not specific to the fisheries and aquaculture industry, but are considered related organizations to this industry. The most important of these organizations are IFAD, WMO, IMO, UNEP, and UNIDO.
